Perches and Roost

What do you call the bars the birds rest on, on a roost ? Does "perch" work here ?
I assume a roost is the whole thing (ie. with several "bars"), while a perch can be a part of it. Is that correct ?

A roost doesn't have to be man-made. A tree that several birds live on is a roost. (But it can be man-made, as you've described.)

Afterthought; both words can be verbs as well as nouns. A bird perches on a perch, and several birds roost in a roost.
