Default decide

What dose the word decide mean in the following sentence?

I decided that I had enjoyed teaching and wanted to apply for a professorship at a major university.

Does it mean that the speaker may not like it but he or she has had the heart set on it?

I don't think English people would use "decided" in this sentence. Anyway I'll try to explain it. I think it means "I came to the conclusion".

Thanks Harry and Anglika.

Anglika, that you agree with harry means that you don't use the word decided in that way but it means to come to conclusion?
