    Default was or were

I will give you a passage. Please solve this for me:

"I was never a refugee but my entire extended family was"

Is the "was" at the end correct or should it be "were"? And if it is "were", is the antecedent to be understood as the plural "refugees"? Thanks.

    Both "was&were" are possible.

    Wink Re: was or were

If you're talking about the individuals that make up your family, it should be "were".
If you're talking about your family as a whole, it should be "was".

IN YOUR CASE BOTH ARE CORRECT.

Eg: * My team is the best
    * My team are wearing white shirts.
( I hope this would make things clearer for you)
