I teach kids here in Brazil, and I have a project on animals.I have 2 questions:
1- When a child is saying that he/she has many pet fish, is it correct to say: I have 10 fishes?
2- When talking about animals' size is it ok to say : Lions are big? or it's better to say Lions are large.
Hello, I am not sure regarding pet fish. if it is common fish from sea or river then you can never say fishes but you can say 10 pieces of fish I think.
And as for lions, "big lion" sounds much better than "large lion".
You can use either fish or fishes for plural, so 10 fishes would be fine.
I think you can have large lions - either adjective would be acceptable. But if you are dealing with young children, I would keep to big.
