1 uis correct, I suppose, but I'd say 'novels which\that are too sad'.
So you'd say 2 is completely wrong?
I wouldn't use either one.

#2 is in the structure of a resultative adjective, since "sad" is not an adverb. It just doesn't work with "write" and "sad".
