The two have meanings that often overlap. Health clubs tend to offer more - maybe a jacuzzi, a sauna, sun lounge... A place that was a Gymnasium may 'close for refurbishing' and then re-open as a health club (with increased membership fees, of course

). Places that don't have room for a decent-sized gym (hotels, businesses...) often crowd a rowing machine and a couple of exercise bikes into a broom-cupboard and call it a 'mini-gym').
