If in a fila there is a cameo appearance by one big star not playing the role of a character but playing himself.......is if fine to say:

In this film a cameo appearance features Giancarlo Giannini playing himself?

In this film there is a cameo performance by Giancarlo Giannini as himself.

That depends. Sometimes an appearance is just that - an appearance. I don't think anyone would refer to, say, Hitchcock's many appearances as 'performances'. But if a person in a cameo role has some spoken lines, or does something more than just sit quietly in the background, it becomes a performance.
