| | Some questions about Reported speech I have a few questions about reported speech.
1.)He said,"Is she happy?"
Reported speech: He asked if she was happy.
Then,
He said,"Isn't she happy?"
How do we rewrite this sentence in reported speech?
2.)Similarly,
He said,"Doesn't it sound familiar?"
He said,"Isn't your name Tim?"
Above examples have a negative in the question. How do we rewrite them in reported speech?
3.)He said,"I am busy now."
Reported speech: He said that he was busy then.
Then,
He says,"I am busy now."
When rewriting in reported speech, does 'now' change to 'then' (reporting verb is in present tense)?
4.)He said,"I love you so much."
When rewriting in reported speech, how do we deal with 'so'?
5.)He said,"Come here."
When rewriting in reported speech, does 'come' become 'go'? Can you pl. tell me how to rewrite it in reported speech?
Thank you. |

| | Re: Some questions about Reported speech I had a look at the pages you mentioned. However, I think that the sentences I mentioned are a little peculiar.
I will appreciate any help with these particular examples. Thanks. |

| | Re: Some questions about Reported speech The examples I gave are not my homework. I just wrote the examples for my better understanding. I will appreciate even if you can help clear my confusion with some other examples.
1.)He said,"Isn't she happy?"
If I follow the rules, then I write in reported speech as:
He asked if she was not happy.
But somehow it didn't appear correct.
2.)Same is the case with the folowing examples:
He said,"Doesn't it sound familiar?"
He asked if it did not sound familiar.
He said,"Isn't your name Tim?"
He asked if his name was not Tim.
3.)He says,"I am busy now."
He says that he is busy now.
He says,"Take this book."
He says that take this book.
My confusion is when reporting verb is in present tense, then present tense remains present tense, but does 'this' become 'that', 'ago' become 'before' etc. ?
4.)He said,"I love you so much."
When rewriting in reported speech, does 'so' become 'very'?
5.)He said,"Come here."
He asked her to come there.
OR
He asked her to go there.
Thank you. |

But somehow it didn't appear correct. | Right, it's incorrect. Consider this, he doesn't know if she is happy or unhappy. He doesn't know the answer, so
Ex: He questioned whether she was happy or not.
Does that help? |
