In the context of birds, what is a "fluted" tail? Thanks

I think it means the tail feathers are rigid and have a distinct profile over the whole tail: this bird typically is described as having a fluted tail: http://www.abirdshome.com/Audubon/VolVI/00690p1.gif
The term is also used in cabinet making to describe vertical ridging in uprights.
