Default frothy hair

He removed his hat and passed a hand over the bare ravine between waves of frothy hair that crashed down from either side of his head.

frothy hair = curly, foamy hair? like Bett Midler in "The Rose" if so then what "bare ravine" here means? the empty space separating the hair like median line? or because of his frothy hair, so it barely see the narrow line between the hair? Sorry if my explaination is too bad!!!

i think he has calvities, not too many hair but a little. "bare ravine" should be his head.
