I don't know the exact answer to this one, engee30, but I can tell you that writer in as writer refers to a role, not a person. Consider these phrases,

(In my role) as Mayor, I will ...
(In my role) as direct, I felt ...

Yes, your explanation really makes sense.
As for the other phrase, without pause etc., I will have to get back to my home country and find the book in which I remember reading about this issue. I'm afraid it won't be soon, because I don't intend to be back there until the end of this year.
