Work/s in progress
If some workmen are repairing the road, should the notice put up read 'Work in progress' or 'Works in progress'?
Thanks in advance.

Work in progress <just the one project>
Works in progress <more than one project>

Works in Progress - Construction Works. The anticipated duration of the following projects ...
Works in Progress - Construction Works
Does that help?

That sort of outdoor sign usually just says 'WORKS' or 'Men at work', or they just use an image: http://www.georgecarrpowerproducts.c.../RoadWorks.gif
The phrase 'work in progress' is usually reserved for creative work (literature, music - that sort of thing).

2. That sort of outdoor sign usually just reads ...
In the second sentence, is the word 'reads' correctly used?

Those links show that my 'usually' should have read 'in BE'.

Re: Work/s in progress
In England, the sign immediately at the site of the repairs would say "Road Works". One mile (or less, maybe 800m) before then, there'd be a sign that says "Road Works Ahead"....despite the fact the road doesn't work, otherwise they'd be no need to work on it!
