Default acknowledge vs accept

What's the difference between "acknowledge" and "accept". Why can "accept" complete the following sentence but "acknowledge" can't? Especially as acknowledge= to recognize or admit the truth of.
It took a long time for the theory of evolution to be...

acknowledge - Definitions from Dictionary.com
Acknowledge implies making a statement reluctantly, often about something previously denied: to acknowledge a fault.

Acknowledge implies that you have noticed or recognised sth but it doesn't necessarily imply accepting it. In business you acknowledge receipt of or you publicly express thanks. It overlaps with confirm.

Agreed. Acknowledge has more than one meaning (Click here), and yet given the context provided (Post #1), confirm changes the meaning of the sentence.

I only mean acknowledgement doesn't necessarily imply acceptance.
