| 1. "The reclassification of the shares of (the name of the company)..." A grammar says that "of phrases" usually take "the". I would like to know whether the above sentence sounds a bit awkward or not (because of the usage of two articles). Furthermore, if we have a few "of phrases" in a row, what usually happens to the articles? Do we ommit some of them, and if we do - which ones? Thanks! 2. "They need to obtain a consent of the Supervisory Board." Do I need to say the or a consent? 3. Do the words final and total always take "the" (e.g. "the final consent", "the total price").. 4. What is the grammar rule explaining the use of a/an in "an increase of 2 million" and similar? Many thanks! |

| Thanks very much for your help.As regards the last question, I just wanted to ask why we need to put "a/an" in front of phrases like "an increase of 2 million", "a reduction of ..", "a profit of 3 billion.." since those phrases sound rather specific to me.Furthermore, please look at this (Annual report of Barclays):"The results reflect revenue growth of 15%..... This is reflected in the total dividend pay-out for the year of 58 pence, a 16% increase over 1999."Why is there no article before "revenue growth" and there is "a" before "16% increase"? Thanks once again.. |
