If you choose plural, you should, I think, write "any of the well-known magazines".

If any has the meaning of any one, then yes, you are right, but it is not inferable from your sentence whether it is what you mean.
As I perceive, even when any means any one, it is often followed by a noun in plural.

From the context I think it follows it shouldn't be plural - how come would he publish this same article in a couple of magazines? Copyrights, my friend, copyrights!!!
