TH pronunciation in the USA

Dear all,


Today one of my students came back from the USA and asked me a puzzling question. Why is "th" sometimes pronounced as "t"? For example: therapy, three. And when it is pronounced interdentally so there appears to be a misuderstanding....

But at the same time some other "th" words are pronunced interdentally.

Does such a phenonmenon really exist?
If yes, what does the pronunciation depend on?
