pop-up
Every president and candidate are writing books these days. I wonder what George Bush JR's will be like. It will be quite interesting reading a book by a president that's
a pop-up.
What does a pop-up mean?

Re: pop-up
In this context, "a pop-up" means one of those books that is usually for children where the pictures inside the book "pop-up" when you open the book.
A pop-up doesn't have to be a children's book; and there are some pretty amazing pop-up books out there. But because of the context in your sentence, it probably means a children's book with pop-up pictures.
Here's an example: http://www.bergintoys.com/heros/2004...%20Book%20.jpg
It's a pretty funny sentence, I'd say.

Re: pop-up
Except that they should get his name right. He's not a junior. It completely negates the humor when they can't get a simple fact right.

Re: pop-up
I think that using "Jr" was probably the intention of the author to say that "W" is the son of George Bush in a tongue-in-cheek sort of way. It's sort of like when a person intentionally (or erroneously) calls a husband or male partner by the last name of the wife or female partner; like calling Steadman, "Mr. Winfrey."
I guess our politics influence our sense of humor.

Re: pop-up
That's a very charitable interpretation. I think that people think they are both called "George Bush" and therefore assume he's a junior. But I had no idea Oprah was married, so I learned something new.

Re: pop-up
I am so glad to have this explained, esltutor. Thank you. I actually googled the phrase and went to Amazon and read the whole review this sentence was taken from, and I still didn't get it. For one thing, the unclear antecedent for "that" made me wonder if the book or the president was supposed to be the pop-up. Then my head was full of pop-up showers, pop flys, Pop Tarts...
Oprah is married?

Re: pop-up
I didn't mean to start a rumor!
No, Oprah is not married. She has a male partner named Steadman Graham (perhaps it is Stedman--different sources have different spellings).
Your welcome, Delmobile. And let's not forget the worst pop up of all: computer pop ups! I hate them!
Best regards,
Debra

I want a Pop Tart now. Thanks, Delmobile. Why don't you talk about chocolate chip cookie dough while you're at it.. :P
My children have the most amazing pop-ups that bring the technology to a level I would never have imagined. One is Alice in Wonderland, in which the rabbit hole opens up several inches over the page. Another has scenes from the US, and there is a bridge that is unbelievable!

Capital JR sounds right, especially given the connection here: the Ewings of Dallas (TV drama); i.e., texas, oil, father's abilities versus son's, etc.
As for pop-up book (i.e., a book usually for children) couldn't it be that the author is supporting this spin?

Re: pop-up
It made me think of the My Pet Goat book. But I don't think that was a pop-up.
Barb D, do you mean Poppin' Fresh refrigerated, ready-to-bake chocolate chip cookie dough? :)
