I was taught at school that when wanting to mean that "I want to go to the market for shopping", one should say "I want to go to market." Is this a valid expression or is it a common error.

I would prefer it with the definite article. :wink:

It's a bit old-fashioned; you hear it in the nusery rhyme about a pig going to market. We also use it wihen we are talking about the goods that are taken there to be sold. For people shopping, I agree with Mike.

Good point about the sellers. We do take our goods to market. In your opinion, is that "to market" an infinitive or a prepositional phrase"? :wink:
