Default sometimes confused

Hi, i am not that good in english, and I just want to ask coz sometimes i've got confused using the on and in, e.g. is it on the letter? or in the letter?

Hi Marjs,

I assume you're talking about the information in a letter, not some bug crawling across the top of a letter that was laid on the table?

He told me in his letter that he's be returning next Monday.

thanks, because some people used, I have mentioned on my letter that ....
