How do you pronounce "engine"?
Hi,
Does the word engine sound like engaine or engiine ? Does it depend on the region? Dictionaries say engiine, but I think I've overheard once or twice engaine too.

Re: How do you pronounce "engine"?
We pronounce with the short ‘i’ sound /w/ (IPA symbol). Since the 2nd syllable is not stressed, it could also be reduced to a schwa sound /c/.

Additionally, short ɪ (as in bin) varies phonetically with short ɛ (as in Ben) and schwa ə (as in bun), which is why you will indeed hear three pronunciatons of engine:
1. eng[ɪ]n <your -iin>
2. eng[ɛ]n <your -ain>
3. eng[ə]n
