We use "He fell asleep just now" as well.

A junior high school student asked me whether the sentence posted is right.
I was told by her that her English teacher think the sentence should be "Dad is sleeping. He fell asleep just now."

Different objects of emphasis: the former is on ongoing action and the latter is on a state.
