The first sentence is perfectly fine.
As for the other, the phrase keep abreast of doesn't work with people. I'd say, It is obligatory for the manager to be familiar with new employees.

There's one thing I can't make out - why did you use the Progressive '...I am now being abroad'. I think you were affected by the adverb now - but since the verb be is a stative verb here, it ought to be used in its simple form, am.
However, if it was some kind of behaviour that you were describing in your sentence, then such usage would be appropriate.

I always try to keep abreast of the affairs in my country, though I am now abroad.
I've always regarded you as a rational person, but now you're being unreasonable, really.
