Teachers,

Is it necessary that the teacher in ESL be a native? For I found one institution which offers ESL, but the teacher isn't a native. I would like to enroll for it's just near us, no sweat. But I'm doubtful of the teacher on how much I could learn from her. I haven't talked to her yet, I hope to take pay them a visit tomorrow.

Here a day of two hours would cost me a day's work as well, 20 sessions, 1 hr/session, two sessions per day, 2-3 meetings/wk. What do you think, would I go for it?

What would I expect from learning ESL? A certificate? How far would they further my English?

* Teachers, how would you rate my English skills based here on my writing, I type as I say it. Am I a beginner(I think not), Intermediate, or advanced?

And also I saw in a bookstore a packages, a book and 3CDs, for being fluent in English and ESL. What could you say about it? It's worth 3days work, what do you think, would I get it?

It really depends on how good she is; there are plenty of good non-native speakers. You're an advanced user of English, so it might benefit you to take one of the advanced exams if a certificate would help you, say, get a different job. I honestly think that you might have a lower opinion of your English than we do. :-)

Richard is right, of course. :-) A native speaker does have an advantage, of course, because he or she grew up learning the language. For an NES* things like understanding idioms (for example) are not particularly difficult. On the other hand, ESL learners study things that I never studied (like conditionals).

I am not certain what you mean by "a day of two hours". By "a day's work" do you mean "a day's pay" or that you would have to take off work?

(Say: "Should I go for it?" or "Should I do it?")

Thanks you! But which one do you think should I do first, get the cd package or study ESL?

It's hard for me to say. You might be too advanced for this particular class. In that case it would probably be a waste of time and money. On the other hand, if it will help you get a certifiicate that you need (for a job, for example) then it might be worth it. If you get credit for what you know already maybe they won't charge as much.

How well do you do with the quizzes on site?

I guess I'm doing well on some and not on others. I know I have problems with prepositions and I need to learn idioms and phrasal verbs too...

I'd go to the school, and see what level they evaluate you as and what courses/exams they offer at advanced level.
