Richard is right, of course. :-) A native speaker does have an advantage, of course, because he or she grew up learning the language. For an NES* things like understanding idioms (for example) are not particularly difficult. On the other hand, ESL learners study things that I never studied (like conditionals).
(Say: "Is it necessary that a teacher of ESL (or ESL teacher) be a native?)
