When we are talking about a range of mountains we use "the". Is this sentence correct? I mean can I say "a range of mountains" instead of mountain range?

You can say 'a mountain range' or 'a range of mountains'. We use 'the' with the names of particular mountain ranges: the Alps, the Himalayas, the Andes, etc.
