What is the diffence between attending summer camp and join summer camp?

I'd use 'attend' (or 'go to'), and 'start at' to refer to the first few days. But you should wait for a few American replies. 'Summer camp' is more of an American phenomenon.

You join the Boy Scouts. (become a member of)
You attend summer camp. (go to/stay at for the duration)
