Default The article `the' before proper noun

Yesterday I talked about two Tom who went to battlefield to fight each other. Now the Tom committed suicide who lost the fight.

The article `the', I think, can be used before a proper noun in the above context.

Could you assist me on this?

    Try:
Yesterday I talked about two Toms who went to war to fight each other.
(I can't make any sense out of the other sentence.)

I think the asker means that one of those men of the name of Tom lost a battle and he commited suicide
I still would not use any article before 'Tom' but let's wait for what teachers have to say

Ah so (Thanks to Neall Beag)! Thus:
The Tom who lost the fight committed suicide. (AE)
(There is no need for "Now" there.)

The word "The" is there to help us distinguish one Tom from the other.

Yesterday I talked about two Toms who fought each other. Now the Tom who lost the fight has committed suicide .

Yes, you can use "the" here as you are identifying a specific "Tom".

    Please note other corrections.

That suggests to me that the suicide happened between the two postings (yesterday and today). I find that unlikely. (Perhaps the poster will enlighten us.

If I understand Gary, he's asking if we can use "the" before a proper noun when there are two things/people who have that proper name.

    A: I live in Springfield.
B: Is that the Springfield in Massachusetts or the Springfield in Missouri?

A: You'll never guess who called me today! Jim Smith!
B: Do you mean the Jim Smith you used to date in high school?

I believe that the correct construction of this sentence is:

Yesterday I spoke about two Toms who went to the battlefield to fight each other. The one who lost the fight has committed suicide.

In the sentence that you have mentioned:

Yesterday I talked about two Tom who went to battlefield to fight each other. Now the Tom committed suicide who lost the fight.

Syntactically, this does not make any sense at all. This will end up confusing the listner.

    Amit
