I think that it is not wrong what you said !But the word afterwards has a place in a sentence which cannot be changed!
After cannot be used alone as a linking word to join one thing that happens with another thing that happens after that. Instead, use (and) then, (and) afterwards, or (and after that:
EXAMPLE: We went to a party and afterwards we went to a club!
