What do you call the word that makes a sentence a question? ie How, does, do, are, can, etc. My grandkids are staying the summer and I am attempting to help them study. I haven't done grammar for over 40 years and can't remember. Thanks for your help.

am/is/are + do/does/did/ have/has/had are auxiliary verbs
can/must/may/will/should/might/could are modal verbs (or modal auxiliary verbs)
Words like where/when/who, etc are often referred to as question words or wh- words. Grammatically, they are not the same- some are adverbs and some are pronouns
