Default Two choice questions

Here are two choice questions from my exam paper:
1:____,the man opened the letter.
A:Nervous
B:To be nervous
C:Be nervous
D:He was nervous
2:He's____the happier for his wealth.
A:no
B:none
C:never
D:not
I'd appreciate if you could explain more clearly.
Thanks a lot !

The right answer to Question 1 is A. Why? It's a non-finite clause in the form of ellipsis, (Being) nervous, the man opened the letter. = The man was nervous while opening the letter.
As for Question 2, it's B that is the right answer. But you know it already. Why? The phrase none the + superlative adjective means not any + adjective (than before). Cf.
He's none the happier for his wealth. = He's not any happier for his wealth.
