Default Meaning of sentence.

"Change someone for the better"
Does it mean that your opinion about someone has become better?

it's not about opinion mainly. It is about changing someone's character (and then, of course, you will change your opinion about him/her too...)

you can change someone for the better, or for the worse - make him/her into a better person or a worse one

Michael used to be a sullen little boy, but with the move to the new school and new friends, I've seen a big change in him for the better.
