Question bottle of crystal

Hello.

I have a question.

After a man asked his girlfriend to marry him, he said
"There's a bottle of Crystal on ice at my place".

Does "a bottle of Crystal" always mean "champagne"?
Do people call champagne crystal because it's a brand name of
champagne?

Thank you,
Tara

Disappointingly, googling brings up "Crystal Pepsi".

I have not met the term "crystal" for champagne, and there is certainly no French champagne of that name.

Hello Anglika,

Yes, I found "Crystal Pepsi", too.
But it is not likely that the man invites his girlfriend for Pepsi
after asking her to marry him.
I forgot to mention it, but he's very rich man.

So I thought it could be something special such as champagne
or wine.
But I'm not sure now. It might be pepsi or totally different thing.
I'll keep searching.

Thank you for your time and kind remark.
Tara

Cristal is the brand name of an expensive champagne. It's properly pronounced "cree-STAHL," but a lot of folks just say "crystal."

Hello Ouisch,

Thank you very much for your kind explanation
and showing URL to Wikipedia!

I'm so glad to be able to understand what the man is talking about.

Phew! Thanks for explaining that. My over-active imagination was entertaining a most unromantic image, involving crystal meth . (Crystal Methamphetamine Fast Facts). Too much junk television

Hello BobK,

Thank you for your comment.

When I consulted with my dictionaries, I found "methamphetamine"
as a definition of cristal. So, I thought about the possiblity, too.
I mean, some couples might enjoy it after vowing eternal love.

I really appreciate all of you for searching and answering
my question.

Tara
