Reported died?

Is the following sentence correct:

"He was reported DIED" ("Poetry from 1900 to 1975")

If i were writing i would write one of the following:

A) "He was reported DEAD"

B) "It was reported that he DIED"

The quote from the poetry book sounds odd to me

Does anyone agree?

He was reported [to have] died -correct
It was reported that he had died of ..[e. g. severe liver problems]
Dozens of Afghan villagers reported dead after NATO attack -headline in a newspaper

I wonder, though, if there is more to that sentence. Consider,

Ex: 29 People reported died in April accidents.
