Smile meaning

Hello
What's the meaning of this expression:

During the Battle of San Jacinto, Smith rode back
and forth across the field behind the Texans
waving his axe to let them know that the bridge
was destroyed.

What do you think does it mean?
You can write your own interpretation of this text and surely many will come to correct it if you made some mistakes.
