empty vs. barren

When I describe conditions of a mountain and I don't see many trees, is it ok to say the mountain is empty or should I say the mountain is barren?

Since "empty" implies a container, I think "barren" is the better choice, although both words are frequently used to describe landscapes.

There's also "treeless" :)

"Bare" would be more usual. Barren implies that nothing is able to grow.
