    Default which is correct?

    hello everybody!
    I am a new member of forumes.I was writing a letter for a friend yesterday bu i didn't know where is she from so i wrote:"can i ask you where you are from?".i am in doubt now for that maybe i should wrote :"can i ask you where are you from?". please tell me wich of two sentences above is correct.

    Are you writing this letter to a friend or for (on behalf of) a friend?

    Can I ask where you are from? is correct. The other is also correct, but less used. I would keep to your first suggestion.
