well, I am not quite sure but I guess that when you use " THE " you mean a specific cow but when you use " A " ,you are talking about cow in general and don't mean any specific one.
I hope that there is another one can help you to make my point clear for i am still biggerner in studying English

This sentence could have two meanings :
(1) you are talking about one cow and that cow is a domestic animal.
(2) All types of cow, or varieties of cow in the world are domestic animals.
A cow is a domestic animal.
This sentence has only one meaning :
(1) Any single cow in the world is a domestic animal.
Note : I am too a beginner. I just told you what I know.
It comes down to specific and non-specific.
The cow - a particular cow you are discussing OR the specific species bos bovis
A cow - an example of the species bos bovis.
