Why do English people say "Who was saved?" even when they mean more than one person? Isn't "Who were saved?" idiomatic?
Who was rescued?
Three people were rescued?

Three people were rescued?
I visited the three people in the hospital who were rescued.

If you ask your question with "Who" you say:Who was rescued?
But you can ask:How many people were rescued?
