Usually the idiom is "give the lie to", which means "show to be false" or "show to be lying".

I am 74 years old an can attest to the customary meaning in Australia and the US as demonstrating the falsity of the particular assertion.
While the traditional UK form, "to give the lie to," is well understood in the US, the more common construction in American English seems to be "to put the lie to."
