I didn't believe him. For one thing, his smile while he was talking was not that honest; for another, he'd always been a skillful lier.

Is it a correct passage? This "for one thing, (...); for another" stands for something like "first, (...); and second, (...)", am I right? If so, is it informal or may be used in formal writing?
