Default needing to be picked up

In neither of your examples is there the context of something being on the ground and needing to be picked up.

I would have written the highlighed parts as "need to be picked up". Could you tell me why here "needing", a gerund is used?

If possible, could you provide me some examples of this kind?

    Thank you Linguaphile.

I know this kind of sentences. I don't think this match with the original one.
