pants and trousers - vocabulary question

I have a question about vocabulary: what is, actually, the difference between ‘pants’ and ‘trousers’? If there is no difference in meaning, and it seems to me so far that there isn't, what is the difference in usage, then? And I’ve also wondered the same about ‘dress’ and ‘frock’.

I believe that in BrE, "pants" commonly refers to underwear, and they use the word "trousers" to refer to long pants.

In the US, folks will know what you mean if you say "trousers," but it's not regularly used in ordinary conversation. We either say "pants" or "slacks."

Ouisch, I've two questions about the word slacks. Do men wear slacks, and are slacks only of the polyester kind?
