Helo, I am astudent of English Philology faculty of University of Latvia. Native language- Russian. We were given a task in Stylistics to find about 50 stylistic devices in British or American literature, 2 examples each. So I am having trouble finding Euphemisms. Could you please give me some examples in the literature where I could find them. At the moment I use Sence and Sensibility by J. Austen, The Hound of Baskervilles by A.C. Doyle, Ch. Bronte's Jane Eyre, Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing, L. Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, R. Kipling's Jungle Books. I found almost everything I needed for the task in these books! But not euphemisms.. :( Thanks a lot!!!
I'll have a look when I get home and can get my hands on my books.
How about 1984? Orwell uses the term 'misprints' when they want to change the facts, and 'unpersons'. Here's a good site ion Newspeak:
Excellent choice for "euphemism".
