You can lose face, but you cannot get face.
 To get face is slang for to get a kiss; e.g., gimme some face / give me a kiss.
Although face, as in to loose face, isn't a Western phrase, having lived in Asia for almost a decade I have often heard the phrases keep face and gain face.
Max: Sam made a mistake. Should I tell her?
Pat: No. Let her keep face.
Max: I told Sam she made a mistake, and now she won't speak to me.
Pat: Allow her the opportunity to gain face by letting her correct one of your mistakes.
Max: But I am a teacher! I don't make mistakes.
Pat: If you want Sam to speak to you again, you'll make the effort. ;-)
I have heard 'save face', and my English-Chinese dictionary has the term "save one's face".
Thanks a lot, 2006.
