What is the difference between "kind of" and "sort of"

Not much. Both are informal when used like "I'm kind of (usually said "kinda") busy right now" or "It was kind of like being in a roller coaster."

Usage like "It was a kind of butterfly, but one that I had never seen before" is not informal, but I don't think that's what you meant?
