Default Meaning of the sentence...

It really seems that there is only so much that you can learn from a book. Learning from someone "hands on" seems needed, and traditionally it has always been the case.

Hello, I would like to learn what the first sentence means. Does it mean "The things you can learn from a book are limited." (this is what I thought when I saw the following sentence.) or vice versa? Thanks in advance.
