Re: Which one is right? It is always difficult to talk about indivdual letters in a way that avoids any ambiguities.
L is even harder because the lower case l looks like an I in some fonts or a 1 in others, so I would use an upper-case L.
There is no elegant solution to this. I don't much like "There are two L's in the word little," but it's my second choice behind "The letter L is in the word little twice."
I would NOT use "Els."
