    Default Infinitive

    Dear all,

    I have one query.

    I want to go.

We have used infinitive in this sentence because verb want takes infinitive.

    But if we say

I want you to complete this work.

In this case I want to know :

can we say that "to complete" is an object of "want" or is it a object of "you".

It relates to "you" - the person who is to complete the work.

As object of "want" > "I want to complete the work" - it means "I" is the person to do it.

Then what is the reason for using infinitive in this sentence(I want you to complete the work), if it is not the object of want. As in first example, it was the object of want and want takes infinitive.

The verb 'want' normally takes the infinitive.
If you yourself want to do something, you simply say:

    I want to go.
I want to visit New York.
    etc.

If you don't want to do something by yourself, you need to use an object with the infinitive:

    I want you to go.
I want my parents to visit New York
    . etc.
