Smile English teacher or teacher of English

Hi teachers

I'm confused
One day my friend told me that she said to her teacher that she would like to be an English teacher
So this teacher answered her :" you will never be an English teacher but a teacher of English"
P.S:because my friend are not a native speaker

However
When my friend asked an American teacher if she could say this(English teacher); she told her it's ok you may

I'm confused
What can we call ourselves exactly in the near future
Of course I'm not a native speaker too

Please answer me
Thanks in advance

I.A

I prefer teacher of English because I`m not a native English speaker, but I have recently discovered that both expressions are correct and interchangeable.

An English teacher means either a teacher of English or
a teacher from England. Stress is different. An English teacher means a teacher of Enlish. An English teacher means a teacher from England.
