coming face to face with animals
The Lodge houses a maximum of 60 guests in cabins linked by raised wooden walkways, which keep visitors from unexpectedly coming face to face with animals wandering around.
I wonder why it's "coming face to face with animals" instead of "coming face to face across animals because "coming across animals" makes sense in my opinion.
Re: coming face to face with animals
You see their face and they see yours. The question is, who runs away first, you or the bear?
There's also come across (e.g., an animal), meaning it crosses your path.

Thanks, Soup.
I think I get it.
