TO FLEE

I am still in doubt about "to flee".

I wrote these two sentences in an essay:

- The prisoner fled from jail the day before the trial.

- The girl fled her house because she couldn´t put up with her authoritarian parents.

In the first one, my teacher corrected for "escaped". He said to flee can´t be used in this situation. (though I found some similar sentences on the net- serached in google). I wonder why it is wrong. (I won´t have the chance to talk to this teacher again!).

In the second one, he crossed "fled", and wrote "ran away". I´ve checked in many dictionaries and some of them say it must be used literally, or that it´s too formal, etc.

I am completely confused now.

Your teacher's choices were fine. But there was nothing wrong with "fled" either.
